Choosing the Right Weights for Strength Training
Choosing the Right Weights for Strength Training

Last week, we received this lovely email from a MenoWell Roscommon participant, and we truly appreciate the time people take to share their feedback!

Dr. Diane Cooper responded with some great advice on choosing weights for strength training. Ideally, having a range of weights is beneficial, but we know that can be costly and take up space. A set of 4kg weights is a great place to start as they are a good balance between light and heavy.

Too light? You won’t build strength.

Too heavy? There’s a higher risk of injury.

Diane said that if the 4kgs feel heavy, to start with 6-8 reps per exercise. As you get stronger, work up to 15 reps. When that feels easy, it’s time to increase the weight!

Strength training is all about progression, start where you are and build from there!

The ‘MenoWell Roscommon’ programme is designed and delivered by EduFIT and supported and funded by Roscommon Leader Partnership in association with Healthy Roscommon Roscommon County Council.
