Receiving a DEXA scan diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis can feel overwhelming. For many women, the initial reaction is caution, a sudden fear that lifting weights, moving dynamically, or exercising hard might lead to injury or fractures. However, exercise science reveals the exact opposite. Bones need targeted mechanical stress to grow stronger.
While our EduFIT at Home platform supports members across a wide range of health goals and conditions, this post focuses specifically on how evidence-based strength training can help to rebuild bone density and improve confidence safely from the comfort of your home.
Bones are living tissue. Just like muscle, bone tissue continuously breaks down and rebuilds in response to physical demands. Bone adapts to the loads under which it is placed so when you engage in strength training, the strain exerted by working muscles on your skeleton triggers specialised cells called osteoblasts to lay down new bone matrix.
Women ask us all of the time “Is walking enough” and the short answer is no. While walking is excellent for heart health and joint mobility, it does not provide sufficient mechanical load or resistance to stimulate significant bone formation on their own. To maintain and rebuild bone density in key areas like the hips, spine, and wrists, you need progressive resistance training 2-3 times per week. By introducing controlled weight to your movements, you deliver the exact stimulus your body needs to halt and even reverse bone loss.
You don’t need to step into a gym to achieve measurable results. Here is what two EduFIT at Home members achieved through expert-led, home-based strength training:
“I got a diagnosis of osteopenia on the highest end of the scale 2 years ago, but have pulled the figure back considerably with strength training with EduFIT. At my recent DEXA scan even the nurse asked what I did to alter the figures so much. I would not have had the courage to go into a gym or know where to start with weights on my own. I now love lifting with Sinead. I tell everybody to join!” – Pamela.
I joined EduFIT after I got diagnosed with Osteoporosis. At my 2 year review I was delighted to see a significant improvement of -0.9 which brings me back to the Osteopenia range. Together with medication, I believe the strength work has made a significant difference so a big thanks to all at EduFIT. – Katie.
