Erasmus+ Programmes

To date we have secured European Union funding from the Erasmus Plus program for ‘AgeWell Europe’ which aims to support healthy ageing in middle-aged and older adults across Europe.

Project 1: AgeWell Europe

The ‘AgeWell Europe’ project was a two-year initiative, running from September 2023 to September 2025, involving significant collaboration and effort from the project team. During this time, the team conducted a comprehensive review of existing digital health and physical activity interventions for middle-aged and older adults in Europe, and carried out a needs analysis with input from fitness professionals and target age groups in all partner countries. An 8-week digital pilot programme was then developed and delivered to over 100 participants across Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Slovenia. The team evaluated the program’s effectiveness through both quantitative and qualitative methods, with research findings to be published soon, and gathered valuable feedback and recommendations from pilot participants. Based on these recommendations, the ‘AgeWell Europe’ programme was revised and the finished product is now freely available for middle aged and older adults in Europe!

What is AgeWell Europe?

‘AgeWell Europe’ is a FREE, 8-week, online, on-demand, exercise and health education program specifically designed for middle-aged (40–64 years) and older adults (>65 years) in Europe. It is suitable for adults of all functional abilities, fitness levels, and for people living with or without a range of clinical conditions. It is available in English, German, Italian, and Slovene.

The programme includes:

  • 2 exercise videos per week for 8 weeks: the exercise classes are 25-35 minutes in duration and are multimodal. This means they include strength, fitness, balance, and flexibility training, which are important for healthy functional ageing.
  • Health education videos: these are 20 minutes in duration and include topics that are relevant to middle-aged and older adults (e.g., the recommended type and amount of exercise for healthy ageing, and special exercise considerations for a range of clinical conditions).

Who created AgeWell?

The ‘AgeWell Europe’ project was designed, delivered and evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of experts from the partner organisations EduFIT (Ireland), Universität Münster (Germany), Istituto Per Servizi Di Ricovero E Assistenza Agli Anziani (Italy), Institut Jozef Stefan (Slovenia) and Anitech (Ireland).

It is funded by the European Union under the Erasmus Plus programme and supported in Ireland by Léargas.
